DAY 166 - 167: Matera
I saw a
program on TV some time ago about a place called Matera where people used to
live in cave-homes. Very interesting and according to this program "not
discovered by the tourist industry yet". Hah! Yeah right... I was
obviously not the only one who saw the program.
I was planning to take a train or bus from Salerno to Matera for a 2 night stay.... well, that was easier said than done. In the end I got up really early and took a train back to Naples in order to grab a bus from there to Matera. Annoying BUT so worth it.
Sadly, LOTS of tourists. I did manage a couple of hours early morning before the busses arrived and normal people get up. Great, only those early morning photos did not come out so great.

A cave dwelling
The train from Salerno to Napoli. It was so much nicer than the local train that runs along the coast.
Southern Italy
Sometimes ya gotta sit yerself down and take a break, even if it is on the on the pavement!
Love that last one!
Cooking in the kitchen that is cut into the limestone.
Intricate patterns are cut into the limestone
Cut into the limestone for water to run-off
Not what you think... it is for passers-by to put their rubbish in.
